The rate and pace the Trump administration has been taking down US government websites, destroying important sources of climate, health, and science data, has sparked a much needed conversation about data resilience. This isn’t just about government takedowns, a hotly contested issue with many tech workarounds. It’s about deleting valuable, publicly funded information. How do we ensure these critical resources aren’t lost to political agendas? The Internet Archive-powered "End of Term Web Archive" captures US Government websites before a handover in power, which is excellent, but the scope is relatively narrow: https://eotarchive.org In January alone, more than 2000 datasets were removed: https://lnkd.in/esGBq-HB There has been efforts by a number of organizations to archive as much as possible: https://lnkd.in/e5Jjupax Harvard has announced it's Data.gov Archive, a "16TB collection includes over 311,000 datasets harvested during 2024 and 2025" https://lnkd.in/gGY3pjm9 Individuals can even donate compute resources in the fight: ArchiveTeam’s Warrior is like SETI@Home, but for archiving. 221A and Hypha Worker Co-operative are thrilled to collaborate with TechSoup/TechSoup Canada and the Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web to host a two-day hybrid workshop on the topic of data sovereignty for galleries, libraries, arts organizations, archives, museums, and special collections. Participants can expect to learn about methods of preserving and sharing digital assets into distributed storage systems such as Filecoin and Inter Planetary File System (IPFS) and their benefits.
